This website was created to mark the 30th anniversary of the military coup which overthrew the Popular Unity government of President Salvador Allender on September 11, 1973.

It contains photographs which were taken a little more than 30 years ago at many of the political demonstrations in Santiago, Chile during the three year lifespan of the Popular Unity.

These photographs have been exhibited simultaneously at the Embassy of Chile in Berlin and the Museum of Cinema in Potsdam in September 2003.

The presentation of these photographs is not chronological. It seemed like a better idea to illustrate some of the most appealing facets of these popular demonstations which developed very spontaneously.

Antonio Skármeta, writer and, until recently, Ambassador to Chile, has written an introduction, placing the photographs in their political context.
